Ahketon

Back in the 80s there was a company called Ahketon that made, amongst other things, 25mm stonecast plaster cast scenery.  They created a modular tower system which allowed you to build a tower of varying height and purpose.  There were bases, tower sections of differing types, and different tops/roofs.  Back in the day I managed to get the Dwarven Watchtower and a couple of Tower sections so I could extend it up if I wanted to.  Recently I obtained a tower base, section and two tops, one a tiled conical roof and one a crenelated fortification.

The Dwarven Watchtower comes in 2 pieces and has a detailed interior.

I also had some Tower Sections.  One with a door and outside stairs and one with just a door.  Again these have detailed interiors and are simply placed one on top of each other to create a tower.

Modular Tower

Recently I obtained some more pieces that go to make up a tower.  I got a 2 story tower with a choice of top.  Again each piece has a detailed interior which you can easily access to place figures in.

The benefits of these towers are obvious.
  • They look great.
  • They are great fortifications for Wargames or even Role-Playing Games.  Each would make a great defensive position on a battlefield or tower to explore in an RPG.
However the downsides are also pretty impressive.
  • They are bulky.  Taking these around to a friend's house is not a simple matter.
  • They weigh a ton!  Plaster is not a light medium to have to carry around.
  • They are prone to chipping and breakage.  You may notice that the newer tower has a missing crenelation and when I got it, it was broken into two pieces.  If you knock two pieces together small chips will break off and the white plaster will show through.  Careful handling is a must.
